Serotonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical produced by neurons to carry messages to other neurons) that regulates many functions, including mood, appetite and sensory perception.  It has a vital role in learning and memory.

Over time, continued use of Ecstasy has been shown to damage the nerve cells which produce serotonin.  This is why scientists say Ecstasy is neurotoxic: it can cause serious, possibly permanent damage to the brain.  Research has linked Ecstasy to long-term damage to those parts of the brain critical to thought and memory.
