Student Assistance and Family
Education (Project S.A.F.E.)
The S.A.F.E. Program is offered within schools, providing easier access to services.
Counselors are available at middle and high schools in Sioux Falls, Lincoln
County and Aberdeen for students to drop in and share their concerns.
Counselors also facilitate individual, group and family sessions to help them
cope with alcohol or other drug issues they face.
S.A.F.E. also offers drug and alcohol screenings, tobacco screenings, assessments,
referrals and after-care for students following treatment.
S.A.F.E. is staffed
by Prevention Specialists, Certified Chemical Dependency Counselors and Family
Therapists.
Many PVPS Prevention counselors
also work with school activity groups. Please visit In the Schools
to find out more.
MAPP-SD:
(Methamphetamine Awareness and Prevention Project of South Dakota)
PVPS also leads the way in educating the public on the dangers of Meth use and
manufacturing. Funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, PVPS
initiated a statewide project known as MAPP-SD. The concept developed by
PVPS is currently the only project of its type in the United States.
MAPP-SD encourages communities to
form coalitions of citizens, business and community leaders, law enforcement and
faith based organizations to examine Meth issues in their area. Working
together, they develop projects to increase the awareness of the dangers
associated with Meth, and educate the public on how they can become involved.
Coalitions are facilitated by trained MAPP-SD coordinators who offer further
training and resources. Together, community coalitions and MAPP-SD are
leading the fight in the statewide effort to battle the epidemic growth of Meth
in South Dakota communities.
MAPP-SD is also spearheading the
formation of DEC (Drug Endangered Children) Teams. DEC Teams are composed
of law enforcement, health care providers and child protection workers.
Members are specifically trained to respond and coordinate efforts whenever
children are discovered in a Meth related environment. Please visit
MAPP-SD on line for detailed information
about Meth and how to join in the fight.
Mayor's Youth Council
In conjunction with the Sioux Falls Mayor's
Office, PVPS offers guidance, supervision and coordination for the the Mayor's
Youth Council. The MYC provides healthy opportunities to young people
through fun events and community service projects. MYC members work on
developing drug and alcohol free concerts, youth grill-outs and battles of the
bands as a few ways to demonstrate their message. Please visit their
web site for more information.
The MYC is comprised of students
from Minnehaha and Lincoln County high schools, both public and private.
Mischa Brown serves as the adult coordinator for the
council. Any teen interested in joining the MYC or in taking part in
future events should check with their school's office,
e-mail or call
