Teens want to know:
Can self-destructive behavior lead to harming others?
    Can you die from self-injury?
What kind of stress triggers this behavior?
What can we do if we think a friend is involved in self-injury?

And parents want to know:
Would I know if my child started hurting him/herself?
What do I do if I suspect my child is involved in self-injury?
    Who can I talk to?

For years, self-injurious behavior was a dark secret.  Now, more young people are taking part in this behavior, therapists are receiving more referrals and parents are wondering if their child is - or could start - hurting herself.

The Improv Troupe from Whittier Middle School in Sioux Falls, under the guidance of Prairie View Prevention Counselor Meegan Reed, tackles the issue in October's Spotlight program.  Following their performance, the students join Prairie View Prevention Services Director Darcy Jensen and Laura Schuldt, MA, NCC, LPC, a therapist with Avera McKennan.  In an open and frank discussion, they open up the facts about self-injury and what people of all ages need to know.
